Opute, Hassan suffer early exits in swimming, boxing

Team Nigeria experienced early exits in swimming and boxing on the opening day of individual events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Clinton Opute and Ayomide Foly Hassan both fell short of advancing to the next rounds in their respective disciplines.

In swimming, Opute competed in the men’s 200m individual medley, finishing sixth in his heat with a time of two minutes 15.40 seconds. This performance was not sufficient to secure a place in the subsequent stage of the competition. Opute's participation marked the beginning of Nigeria's individual events campaign at the Games.

In boxing, Hassan was eliminated from the men’s 70kg division after a challenging Round of 32 bout against Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai. Thai secured a 4-0 victory on points, advancing to the Round of 16. Despite a spirited effort from Hassan, Thai's composed and tactical performance proved decisive.

Hassan's defeat concluded his campaign in Glasgow, though his effort was seen as representative of the fighting spirit within Team Nigeria’s boxing squad. The Nigerian athletes faced tough competition as the Games progressed.
