59-year-old Miura scores in Fukushima United’s 7-0 victory over Furukawa

Veteran footballer Kazuyoshi Miura, at 59 years old, has once again defied expectations by scoring a goal for Japanese third-tier side Fukushima United. The iconic striker found the back of the net in the 52nd minute during Fukushima's dominant 7-0 win against Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor's Cup on Saturday. This strike is his first competitive goal in almost four years, with his previous goal scored in November 2022 for Suzuka PG.

Affectionately known as "King Kazu" in Japan, Miura's goal adds another remarkable chapter to a career that has already surpassed four decades. He is a celebrated figure in Japanese sports, having been instrumental in the early professionalization of football in the country and a prominent face of the J League since its inception in 1993. His journey began with Brazilian club Santos in 1986, and he has since played professionally in multiple countries, including Italy, Croatia, and Australia.

Despite reaching an age where most athletes have long retired, Miura continues to compete at the highest professional level. His loan spell with Fukushima United from J2 League club Yokohama FC has been extended until June 2027, indicating his enduring passion for the game. Although he has been with Yokohama FC since 2005, he has not played for them since 2020. Miura also holds a significant record at the international level, having scored 55 goals in 89 appearances for the Japanese national team.

Miura has previously expressed his ambition to continue playing into his sixties, and his recent goal serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication and love for football. His extended contract suggests he is determined to keep adding to his legendary career.
