70-year-old woman killed as ‘drunk’ son of Haryana police officer crashes Mercedes in Delhi

A tragic accident in northwest Delhi claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman and left a family of three injured when a speeding Mercedes sedan, allegedly driven by an intoxicated 27-year-old man, crashed into their vehicle early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred near Narela around 8 a.m. Police reported that the silver Mercedes E-Class was traveling at a high speed when it struck a grey Maruti WagonR. The impact was so severe that the hatchback was thrown aside, crushing the pedestrian, identified as Urmila Devi, against a parked three-wheeler.

Passersby and the victim's family allege that the Mercedes driver, Shubham Sharma, who is reportedly the son of a Haryana Police sub-inspector, was drunk and driving recklessly. Beer and empty liquor bottles were recovered from the Mercedes at the scene. Sharma was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving causing death and injuries. Police stated that additional charges would be added if medical tests confirm he was under the influence of alcohol.

The occupants of the Maruti WagonR – a couple in their 40s and their eight-year-old daughter – sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized. While the mother and daughter were discharged after initial treatment, the father is undergoing treatment for internal injuries but is reported to be out of danger.

Urmila Devi's nephew, Sunil Kumar, witnessed the accident and stated that his aunt was badly injured and later declared dead at the hospital. He described Sharma as appearing clearly drunk and allegedly misbehaving when confronted after the crash. Police confirmed the recovery of liquor bottles but are awaiting the driver's medical report to officially establish intoxication.
