8-year-old boy dies after being shot with air rifle in Rivera

An 8-year-old boy has died in Rivera, Uruguay, following a severe injury from a compressed air rifle. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Santa Isabel neighborhood. The child sustained a gunshot wound to his left eye.

He received initial medical attention at Rivera Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the intensive care unit (CTI) at Tacuarembó Hospital. Medical professionals diagnosed him with brain damage after performing various studies. Despite undergoing treatments, the boy succumbed to his injuries.

The Prosecutor's Office in Rivera, in collaboration with the police, is working to determine the exact causes of the incident. "Given that the victim is a minor and in consideration of the profound grief his family is experiencing, no data that could allow for his identification or other details that might affect his privacy will be provided," the authorities stated. The Rivera Police Department extended its "most sincere condolences" to the family and loved ones.
