8-year-old girl dies from brain-eating amoeba after swimming in Louisiana lake

A tragic case in Louisiana has resulted in the death of an 8-year-old girl due to infection by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the "brain-eating amoeba." Health authorities suspect the child contracted the deadly parasite while swimming in a local lake.

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba found in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. Infection typically occurs when contaminated water enters the nose, allowing the amoeba to travel to the brain. While extremely rare, the infection is almost always fatal, causing primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a severe brain inflammation.

Symptoms of PAM usually begin within one to nine days after infection and can include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. The condition rapidly progresses, leading to stiff neck, seizures, confusion, and ultimately, coma and death, often within five days of symptom onset. Health officials urge caution when swimming in warm freshwater, recommending measures like holding the nose shut or using nose clips to prevent water from entering the nasal passages.
