While global leaders might be enjoying the French Riviera, China's elite political figures opt for a more discreet summer retreat. They gather annually at Beidaihe, a modest seaside resort town approximately 300 kilometers east of Beijing, a tradition steeped in secrecy and heightened security.

This annual getaway for top Communist Party officials is not publicly announced, with security measures intensifying from early July. Drone flights are banned, and tourists face restrictions on activities like hot air ballooning and private boat excursions along the coast. By early August, President Xi Jinping and his closest advisors typically disappear from public view for a 10 to 14-day break, only reappearing for national emergencies like natural disasters.

Beidaihe's understated appearance, characterized by Soviet-style gray villas and simple beachfront restaurants, aligns with Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign and emphasis on political modesty. Historian Rana Mitter explains that this choice of a traditional, unpretentious resort sends a clear message, contrasting sharply with the image of luxury associated with five-star hotels. It avoids any perception of corruption or extravagance.

The resort's history as a retreat for top leaders dates back to 1953 when Mao Zedong first chose it as his summer residence and workplace. Its proximity to the capital and the cooling sea breeze made it an ideal location for setting the political agenda during a quieter period of the year. Despite its simple facade, Beidaihe attracts around 50 million local tourists annually, highlighting its enduring popularity.
