Abbas: Sustaining Nigeria’s Environmental Consciousness

Nigeria's Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal Abbas, is actively tackling the nation's pressing environmental concerns, moving beyond typical political maneuvering. Appointed in October 2023, Abbas has focused on combating desertification, land degradation, and drought, while also showcasing Nigeria's progress in sustainable land management.

Abbas brings a wealth of experience to his role, having served in various capacities within the public sector. His background includes lecturing at the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria, and holding positions as Special Assistant to federal ministers and the President. He also served as Secretary to the State Government of Kaduna from 2015 to 2023.

The minister stresses the immediate relevance of environmental issues, stating, “It is the air we breathe, the land that feeds us, the rivers that sustain communities, and the climate that shapes the future.” He has detailed the multifaceted environmental threats facing Nigeria, such as expanding desertification in the north, severe flooding in the South-East and South-South, oil pollution in the Niger Delta, widespread deforestation, and the growing impact of climate change on food security and livelihoods.
