Abelardo de la Espriella's political movement, Defensores de la Patria, has officially transitioned into a political party. The National Electoral Council (CNE) approved the party's legal status on Monday, a significant development just four days before de la Espriella's presidential inauguration.

The decision by the electoral body passed with a six-to-one vote in favor. This legal recognition empowers the newly formed party to field candidates for various regional positions, including mayoralties, governorships, municipal councils, departmental assemblies, and local administrative boards. These nominations will be in preparation for the regional elections scheduled for October 2027.
