Abia at 35: Governor Otti marks anniversary, says state is 'only just beginning'

Abia State Governor Alex Otti marked the state's 35th anniversary on Thursday, characterizing its journey as one of resilience and calling for collective effort to build a stronger future.

Like all of us, our past leaders may not have been perfect, but we must never lose sight of their efforts at building a political entity that answers to the aspirations of all who share in its heritage.

In a statewide broadcast, Governor Otti reflected on the state's creation on August 27, 1991, acknowledging the contributions of past leaders, including the first democratically elected governor, Ogbonnaya Onu, and subsequent governors like Orji Kalu, Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu. He also recognized the role of military administrators in the state's early years.

"While it is only decent that we congratulate ourselves for the blessings of the last 35 years, it is also prudent that we remind ourselves that we are only just beginning," Otti stated. He emphasized that the anniversary is not just a time for celebration but also a moment to recognize the significant work still ahead.

Over the past three years, Otti's administration has focused on key sectors, investing in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and technology. He reported that more than 1,000 kilometers of roads have been rehabilitated across urban and rural areas, and thousands of teachers and health workers have been recruited and trained. The government is also developing primary healthcare facilities in all 184 wards and enhancing smart school initiatives and health insurance programs.

Furthermore, the administration is boosting agricultural investments to create jobs and increase household incomes, while leveraging technology to improve land administration and expand opportunities for young people. Governor Otti also confirmed the commencement of payments for gratuity arrears dating back to 2001, vowing to continue these payments as resources permit. He urged residents to fulfill their civic duties by paying taxes and supporting security agencies, emphasizing that "Abia is ours to build, and thankfully, we are on the right track."
