Abia varsity lecturers suspend strike

Lecturers at Abia State University have ended their industrial action, with academic duties set to resume on Friday, August 28, 2026. The decision follows a congress meeting where union members reviewed the circumstances leading to the strike.

We are giving the university management up to Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze and lift his suspension.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch, however, issued a firm ultimatum to the university management. They demand the immediate recall of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze, whose suspension has been a point of contention. The union has set a deadline of Friday, September 4, 2026, for Nwaeze's reinstatement. Failure to comply will result in the immediate resumption of the suspended strike.

The failure by management to comply within this stipulated period would leave us with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.

In a statement signed by the Branch Chairperson, Dr Chidi S. Mba, and Secretary, Dr Victor U. Obisike, the union expressed concern over Nwaeze's continued suspension. They urged members to remain united and committed to the union's goals, acknowledging their "unity, resilience, commitment and support" throughout the strike period. The leadership also reminded members that only the branch chairperson is authorized to speak officially on behalf of ASUU-ABSU.
