Kaduna varsity begs ASUU to suspend strike

Kaduna State University management has appealed to the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-KASU) to suspend its ongoing two-week warning strike. The university cited the state government's intervention as a new opportunity to resolve the lecturers' grievances.

The appeal came just a day after ASUU-KASU initiated the strike, prompted by dissatisfaction with the implementation of agreements and concerns over staff welfare. University management stressed the negative impact of the strike on students, many of whom have traveled to attend the institution. They warned that disruptions to the academic calendar could harm students' studies and future plans.

Management urges ASUU-KASU to give the ongoing dialogue every opportunity to succeed and to reconsider the suspension of the warning strike, particularly in view of the concrete steps already being taken by the Kaduna State Government to address the issues under discussion.

University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Musa, urged ASUU-KASU to give the dialogue a chance to succeed. He noted the concrete steps taken by the Kaduna State Government to address the issues. Governor Uba Sani has constituted a nine-member committee, led by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo, to engage with the lecturers' concerns and provide recommendations within a month.

Management acknowledged the governor's commitment to resolving the crisis through dialogue, viewing the committee's formation as a demonstration of the government's willingness to find solutions. They encouraged the union to leverage this intervention rather than prolong the dispute, emphasizing the opportunity for constructive engagement between the government, university, and unions.
