Abinader Calls Students to New School Year, Inaugurates Covered Sports Area

President Luis Abinader has called for widespread participation from students, parents, teachers, and educational authorities as the new school year commences on Monday. His remarks came during the inauguration of a covered sports facility at the Leonor Novas Volquez School in Jimaní, Independencia province.

Let's attend on Monday so we can start a productive year for the education of the Dominican Republic.

Abinader encouraged everyone to maximize the new academic year for learning and contributing to the development of Dominican education. The newly opened facility in Jimaní is expected to benefit over 1,500 students. This project is part of a broader initiative to construct covered areas in schools nationwide, a program that originated from a 2021 request by high school students in Jimaní.

The program's genesis involved a student challenging the president to experience playing basketball under the intense sun, highlighting the need for shaded facilities. These covered spaces are designed for more than just sports; they will host graduations, school activities, and community gatherings, thereby improving the overall educational infrastructure. Minister of Education Luis Miguel De Camps affirmed that these facilities enhance school possibilities, fostering sports, talent development, and community engagement while strengthening values and a sense of belonging.

A space like this represents an opportunity to learn, to share, to play sports, to celebrate, to protect oneself from the sun and the rain.

Student Antony Félix expressed gratitude for the new facility, acknowledging President Abinader's responsiveness to community needs. The project was executed by the Directorate of School Infrastructure. The inauguration was attended by several government officials, including the Minister of Public Works and provincial representatives.
