Abinader elected PRM president for four-year term

Luis Abinader secured another four-year term as the president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) on Sunday. The election took place during the party's National Assembly of Delegates, where Abinader was the sole candidate for the leadership position.

The party's leadership had previously agreed on a single slate of candidates, which was then approved by acclamation from the delegates. This process ensures Abinader's continued leadership within the PRM until 2030.

Initially, party authorities were set to serve two-year terms, a change made to allow the party to focus on governance. However, this was modified during the assembly to extend the term to four years, aligning with the presidential term. This change means national authorities will serve until 2030, while territorial leadership terms will conclude in 2028.

Key figures like Deligne Ascención, previously the Minister of Public Works, were appointed to significant roles. Ascención will serve as the executive first vice president, a position designed with expanded operational duties to free up Abinader for his presidential responsibilities. Other notable appointments include Milagros Ortiz Bosch as second vice president and Juan Garrigó Mejía as secretary-general.
