Abiodun to Ogun Monarchs: Mobilise subjects for peaceful, responsible 2027 polls

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has called upon traditional rulers across the state to leverage their influence at the grassroots level to ensure citizens engage in peaceful, responsible, and informed participation in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The governor made this appeal during the inauguration of Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, as the new Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas in Abeokuta.

Beyond security, I also called on our royal fathers to continue mobilising our people towards responsible civic participation, particularly as we enter another electoral season.

Governor Abiodun stressed the importance of monarchs educating their subjects on the significance of civic participation. He urged them to actively discourage violence, thuggery, hatred, and any other acts that could jeopardize the state's peace and stability before, during, and after the elections. The governor described the 2027 elections as a critical democratic transition, emphasizing that a democracy's strength is measured not just by the number of votes cast but also by the peace, responsibility, and sound judgment demonstrated by voters.

Highlighting the vital role of traditional institutions, Abiodun noted their extensive reach and moral authority at the grassroots. He believes they are instrumental in ensuring that the electoral period does not disrupt the peace and development the state has achieved. "Beyond security, I also called on our royal fathers to continue mobilising our people towards responsible civic participation, particularly as we enter another electoral season," he stated.

Our people should be encouraged to recognise and support the development strides of the government and, when the time comes, translate their appreciation into their democratic choices at the polls.

The governor also encouraged the monarchs to remind their subjects that elections should never be an excuse for violence, hatred, or division. He urged them to uphold the peace nurtured collectively and participate responsibly in initiatives that advance the state's development agenda, encapsulated in the 'Building Our Future Together' agenda. Abiodun commended the traditional rulers for their ongoing support, recognizing them as strategic partners in maintaining peace, enhancing security, and fostering grassroots development, particularly in intelligence gathering and community mobilization.
