AC Milan is mourning the loss of Franco Baresi, a legendary defender and iconic captain who passed away at 66. The club described his passing as a moment of deep sadness, stating that his example and integrity are forever imprinted on the club's DNA, alongside his iconic No. 6 jersey.

Baresi dedicated his entire 20-year professional playing career to AC Milan, where he captained the team through its golden eras in the 1980s and 1990s. During his tenure, he helped the club secure three European titles and six Serie A championships. He amassed over 700 official appearances for Milan, with only his defensive partner Paolo Maldini playing more games.

Beyond his club achievements, Baresi was a key figure for the Italian national team, earning 81 caps. He was part of the squad that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain and played in the 1994 final. He retired from professional football in October 1997.

While Italian media initially reported his death prematurely in midweek, Milan confirmed he was undergoing a "difficult and delicate period." Baresi had been facing health issues since undergoing lung surgery in August of the previous year, followed by immunotherapy treatment.
