Acceptable waiting time for a test will soon be defined

In Croatia, the issue of long waiting times for medical services continues to be a significant concern, prompting the Health Care Fund (HZZO) to refund costs for privately obtained treatments. Last year, the HZZO reimbursed nearly €300,000 to patients who had to seek private healthcare due to prolonged waits in the public system. While this figure represents a decrease from the previous year, it still underscores a persistent problem within the national healthcare system.

Patient advocacy groups have voiced strong criticism regarding the extended waiting periods for diagnostic procedures, some of which can stretch for months or even over a year. They argue that such delays can render the diagnostic tests meaningless, effectively making the healthcare service inaccessible. This situation forces many patients to either endure long waits or bear the financial burden of private medical care.

The HZZO's refunds, while offering some relief, are seen by many as a temporary fix rather than a solution to the systemic issues plaguing the healthcare sector. The Croatian Association for the Promotion of Patient Rights has been vocal in calling for improvements, including the potential introduction of penalties for patients who miss appointments without timely cancellation, a measure aimed at optimizing the use of available resources.

From a Croatian perspective, this issue is deeply personal, affecting the health and well-being of citizens. While international coverage might focus on the financial aspects or policy debates, for Croatians, it's about timely access to essential medical care.
