Actor Francesc Garrido, star of ‘I Know Who You Are,’ dies at 56

Francesc Garrido, the Catalan actor known for “I Know Who You Are” and “The Gypsy Bride,” has died at 56 after a heart problem. The Union of Actors and Actresses and the Catalan Film Academy announced his death and expressed their support for his family, friends and the wider film community.

Garrido built a career spanning more than three decades across theater, cinema and television. He worked in Catalonia and elsewhere in Spain, appearing in more than 30 film projects and receiving two Gaudí Award nominations. His screen work included “Gran Reserva,” “Isabel,” “Clanes” and “The Nameless.”

His television roles included Juan Elías, the central character in the 2017 thriller “I Know Who You Are.” Garrido played a prominent lawyer who loses his memory after a car accident and becomes a suspect in his niece’s disappearance. From 2022 to 2026, he also played Buendía in “The Gypsy Bride,” a methodical forensic doctor in the adaptation of Carmen Mola’s literary trilogy.

Garrido began his professional career in theater in 1990 and performed in Catalan productions of classics including Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” and William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” and “The Tempest.” He returned to Barcelona’s Teatre Lliure in 2025 for “The Master and Margarita,” directed by Àlex Rigola, after working with the director on David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” the previous year.

His film credits included “Smoking Room,” for which he shared the Málaga Film Festival’s best actor award with the male cast, as well as “The Sea Inside,” “Alatriste” and “Take My Eyes.” He still had projects awaiting release, including “Todo lo necesario,” scheduled for 2027, and “Sira,” a continuation of “The Time in Between,” in which he reprised the role of Vázquez, a police commissioner in Spanish Morocco.
