Adal Ramones draws the line in the reality-show henhouse

Adal Ramones accepts conflict as part of reality television. Contestants can argue, challenge one another and try to leave their rivals without an answer. But for the host of La granja VIP, the line is crossed when tension turns into insults or classist, sexist or xenophobic language.

Ahead of the second season’s premiere on TV Azteca, Ramones says the production will impose tougher sanctions. He says contestants may use arguments to defeat a fellow participant, but not insult someone simply to insult them. “One thing is that you have to put forward arguments to defeat a teammate, leave them speechless and win, but another thing is insulting just for the sake of insulting. We will not allow it. If it happens, there will obviously most likely be serious punishments, including expulsion.”

The warning follows confrontations in other reality shows and in the first season of La granja VIP. In December, an argument between Alberto “El Patrón” del Río and Eleazar Gómez escalated into physical contact. After reviewing the footage, the program directly nominated the wrestler and reprimanded Gómez. Ramones says the penalties will now be stricter.

The new season features Niurka Marcos, Carlos Trejo, Manelyk González, Ivonne Montero, Kunno and La Bebeshita. Alfredo Adame, the first season’s winner and Trejo’s longtime public rival, will serve as a critic. Ramones expects the farm setting to add pressure because none of the contestants has worked with animals, milked cows or collected eggs on the show before.
