Adana Mayor Denies Reports of Joining New Party After Prison Sentence

Adana Mayor Zeydan Karalar has responded to widespread speculation that he might leave the Republican People's Party (CHP) to join a new political entity following his recent prison sentence. Karalar was handed a 6-year, 3-month jail term for bribery charges as part of a trial involving 200 defendants, including seven mayors who were suspended from their posts.

The court's decision has complicated Karalar's potential return to his mayoral duties pending an appeal. This situation fueled rumors of a political realignment, with reports suggesting he would depart from the CHP. However, Karalar has firmly refuted these claims.

Speaking to Sözcü newspaper columnist Saygı Öztürk, Karalar asserted his commitment to his current political path. "I will continue on the same road. I am a consistent person. I am not someone who changes easily," he stated. He added, "We will work, and are working, for our party to be good."

Karalar's remarks suggest a desire to remain within the CHP framework and focus on party matters, despite the legal challenges he faces. The outcome of his appeal will be critical in determining his political future and his ability to continue serving as mayor.
