Adeyemi leaves Dortmund for Barcelona

Karim Adeyemi is heading to FC Barcelona, leaving Borussia Dortmund to sign a contract with the Spanish champions that runs until 2031. The 24-year-old forward was officially presented by the Catalan club, expressing his ambition to win titles.

Barcelona's club president, Joan Laporta, had previously confirmed the impending signing to Spanish media. Adeyemi's move was delayed as Laporta was at the World Cup final in the United States, and the player himself was absent from Dortmund's pre-season diagnostics due to transfer negotiations. Reports suggest the transfer fee settled upon by Dortmund and Barcelona is 22 million euros, with an additional seven million euros in potential bonuses.

Adeyemi, whose contract with Dortmund was set to expire in the summer of 2027, had informed the club of his desire to leave. He initially joined Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg four years ago for approximately 30 million euros. During his tenure at Dortmund, he played 146 competitive matches, scoring 36 goals, and was part of the team that reached the Champions League final in 2024, losing to Real Madrid.

A significant factor in Adeyemi's decision to join Barcelona appears to be his familiarity with the new coach, Hansi Flick. Flick, who previously managed the German national team, first called Adeyemi up in September 2021. Adeyemi is represented by agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Barcelona star Lamine Yamal. Dortmund had been attempting to extend Adeyemi's contract for weeks without success.
