Adwoa Safo injured in shooting incident; police launch probe

Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, sustained a gunshot injury on Sunday following a shooting incident near the residence of her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, in Kwabenya, Greater Accra Region.

The incident reportedly occurred as Safo was en route to a ceremony organized by the Kristo Asafo Church to introduce a successor to the late founder. Unconfirmed reports suggest armed individuals fired at her vehicle, with one bullet allegedly grazing her neck. However, the Ghana Police Service later stated preliminary investigations indicated a gunshot wound to her left ear.

Nana Kofi Kantanka, legal counsel for the Kristo Asafo Church, offered a different account. He stated that the church's Council of Elders was appointing a successor from the founder's children, as per the church's constitution. He claimed that none of the children responded to invitations regarding the succession process. According to Kantanka, a successor had been selected and was being introduced to the General Council when a disturbance occurred. He alleged that security personnel fired warning shots to prevent Safo from forcing entry, but could not confirm if these shots caused her injury.

"What I know is that she fired the first shot, and when she fired those shots, the security apparatus also knew that the lives of people were at risk, so they were giving warning shots," Kantanka stated, questioning Safo's actions and suggesting she was best placed to explain them. The church leadership plans its own investigation.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has initiated its own probe. A statement from the police confirmed that the Madina Divisional Command is investigating the matter. Safo reported the incident to the Kwabenya Police and provided a vehicle with visible gunshot damage, which has been retained for forensic examination. She received a medical report form for treatment.
