African nations boost local mobile phone production

Africa's technology sector is witnessing a rise in homegrown mobile phone brands, signaling a growing ambition to establish local manufacturing and assembly capacity across the continent. Companies in Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Egypt are at the forefront of this movement, aiming to compete in a market traditionally dominated by global giants.

Nigeria's Afrione, established in 2016, introduced a "Made in Nigeria" mobile and tablet brand, setting up a manufacturing and assembly plant in Lagos in 2017. While the company assembles smartphones and feature phones, it's important to note that "Made in Nigeria" primarily refers to local assembly using imported components, rather than full local manufacturing.

Mara Phones gained international attention for establishing manufacturing facilities in Rwanda and South Africa, positioning itself as a key player in Africa's attempt to join the global technology manufacturing value chain. Although its most prominent African manufacturing activities date back several years, the brand remains a significant example of the continent's industrial aspirations.

Egypt's SICO Technology launched the Nile X smartphone in 2017 and established manufacturing operations in the country, aligning with Egypt's broader strategy to attract electronics manufacturing. Similarly, Algeria's Condor is another established African electronics brand with a significant presence. These initiatives collectively represent a push towards greater technological self-sufficiency and economic development within Africa.
