African Swine Fever Active in Seven Serbian Districts; Situation Stabilizing

African swine fever remains active in seven districts across Serbia, with a total of 29,241 pigs euthanized or deceased as of July 20, according to Minister of Agriculture Dragan Glamočić. While the situation is showing signs of stabilization, with a daily decrease in affected animals, the virus has had a significant impact, particularly in the Srem, Mačva, and parts of Belgrade (Obrenovac) regions, as well as Kolubarski, Podunavski, Južnobački, and Zapadnobački districts. Glamočić noted that the Sremski district has seen the highest number of affected pigs, stating that accountability would be sought for the situation there. Local self-governments have been advised to declare states of emergency, a measure adopted by several municipalities, though some, like Velika Plana, have not due to a single case. The minister emphasized the need for a unified effort to manage the disease, acknowledging that it cannot be eradicated and that no vaccine currently exists. Meanwhile, the chairman of the parliamentary committee proposed a temporary halt on forest logging until September 1 to aid in controlling the virus's spread, as humans can act as carriers.
