After decades – Vilnius's "Žalgiris" faces historic Georgian giant Dinamo

After several decades, Vilnius's football club "Žalgiris" is preparing to face the historic Georgian powerhouse, Tbilisi's "Dinamo," in a UEFA tournament. The first match is scheduled for July 23 in Tbilisi, with the return leg taking place a week later in Vilnius.

Tbilisi's "Dinamo," founded in 1925, is the most decorated and internationally recognized club in Georgia. During the Soviet era, the team secured two league championships (1964, 1978) and two cup victories (1976, 1979). Their most significant achievement came in 1981 when they won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, defeating clubs like London's "West Ham" and Rotterdam's "Feyenoord" en route to a 2-1 final victory over East Germany's "Carl Zeiss Jena." "Dinamo" remains the only Georgian club to have won a European trophy.

Since Georgia regained independence, "Dinamo" has continued its domestic dominance, winning 19 league titles and 13 cup titles. However, in the last decade, the club has faced increased competition from rivals like Batumi's "Dinamo" and Kutaisi's "Torpedo." Despite this, Tbilisi's "Dinamo" has claimed three league titles in the past 10 seasons, the most recent being in 2022, a triumph significantly aided by current "Žalgiris" player Stanislav Bilenkyi, who scored 10 goals that season.

Internationally, "Dinamo" has not reached the group stages of a European competition since 2005, and last successfully navigated three qualifying rounds in the Europa League in 2012. This upcoming match marks the first UEFA encounter between "Žalgiris" and "Dinamo." However, older generations of Lithuanian football fans are familiar with "Dinamo," as the teams played several times in 1953 and 1961, and met 14 times between 1983 and 1989. During that latter period, "Žalgiris" won four matches, three ended in draws, and "Dinamo" secured seven victories.

"Dinamo" also boasts one of the region's most renowned football academies, nurturing several generations of Georgian football talent. The club's alumni include prominent players like David Kipiani, Aleksandr Chivadze, Ramaz Shengelia, Temuri Ketsbaia, Shota Arveladze, Kacha Kaladze, and Giorgi Kinkladze. The academy also produced current European football superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
