After flash floods in Padang, residents begin cleaning homes from mud deposits

Residents in the Lapau Munggu area of Padang, West Sumatra, have begun the arduous task of cleaning their homes and neighborhoods after a devastating flash flood inundated the region.

Mud and debris carried by the floodwaters still cover houses and streets, a day after the disaster struck. Residents, alongside volunteers, are working together in a mutual aid effort (gotong royong) to clear the sludge and restore normalcy to their daily activities.

The Provincial Government of West Sumatra has officially declared a transition status from emergency to recovery. This designation serves as the basis for accelerating response and recovery efforts in the affected areas, which include those impacted by floods, flash floods, landslides, and strong winds.

This recovery phase is set to last until September 18, 2026. It encompasses crucial initiatives such as rehabilitating damaged infrastructure, restoring essential public services, and providing necessary assistance to the communities affected by the disaster.

Local authorities, in coordination with relevant agencies, are actively assessing the extent of the damage and distributing aid to expedite the recovery process across the affected regions of West Sumatra. The focus remains on helping residents rebuild their lives and communities in the aftermath of the severe flooding.
