After new shooting, daughter detained over attack on surviving funeral-home owner

A new burst of gunfire at a funeral home in Pedro Juan Caballero led police to detain the daughter of the business owner, who had survived an attempted attack one day earlier.

Lucía Morel Alves, 35, was arrested Sunday on the orders of prosecutor Mirtha Martínez during a police operation at Funeraria Pax Conesul in the Mariscal Estigarribia neighborhood. Unknown attackers had fired several shots at the premises during the early morning.

The funeral home belongs to Marcelino Morel Cabrera, 61, and is managed by his daughter. Morel Cabrera survived a shooting on Saturday morning. According to sources in the Public Prosecutor’s Office, he identified his daughter in his initial statement to investigators as the person who allegedly ordered that attack.

The motive for the conflict has not been disclosed. Sources close to the victim said it may involve disagreements over assets belonging to the family estate. Prosecutors are expected to charge Morel Alves with attempted homicide in the coming hours, while police continue looking for those who carried out both the earlier attack and the shooting at the funeral home.
