After Saxony-Anhalt election, BSW leader says party has little in common with AfD

BSW co-leader Amira Mohamed Ali says her party sees little common ground with Germany’s AfD after the election in Saxony-Anhalt. She reaffirmed the proposal for an independent state premier, saying neither side has a majority and that an AfD or other partisan premier would deepen social divisions.

Asked about possible cooperation with the AfD in an interview with broadcaster WDR5, Mohamed Ali said, “Well, honestly, I don’t think many of our policies could get through, because there is simply little common ground.” She identified energy as one area of agreement and said the BSW wanted to pursue a Bundesrat initiative for affordable energy in Saxony-Anhalt.

Beyond that issue, she said the BSW would maintain the position it had taken before the election. The party would vote for neither Sven Schulze of the CDU nor Ulrich Siegmund of the AfD as minister-president. “After the election, we will do what we said before the election,” Mohamed Ali said.

The BSW has also confirmed that it could abstain in a third round of voting in the state parliament if AfD lead candidate Siegmund stood for election.
