Against Teams That Park the Bus, Panathinaikos Needs a Key

Panathinaikos got the result against Niki Volos, but the victory did little to hide a troubling performance. The bigger concern was not simply the form of individual players, but the mindset several of the green shirts brought to the match.

Against a lower-division opponent at the Olympic Stadium, Panathinaikos had an opportunity to build a strong goal difference for the rest of the cup competition. Instead, it played for long periods without the necessary intensity. It held more than 70% possession and camped around Niki’s penalty area, yet never looked truly convincing or dominant.

The ball moved too slowly and often predictably. Panathinaikos lacked the quick combinations, runs through the lines and one-on-one actions needed to break open a compact defense. Niki kept its lines close, crowded the box and repeatedly forced the hosts to search for answers from the wings. That plan worked because Panathinaikos could not raise the speed of its circulation.

The match exposed a recurring problem against organized defenses, and coach Nistrup must find an answer because similar games will come throughout the season. The difficulty was clear when he had to bring on first-choice players to change the match. Levi García and Taborda added quality, then combined to create the only goal.

That also raises a question about the squad’s depth. With strong competition for places, matches like this should give players outside the regular starting lineup a chance to demand more playing time. Few did so against Niki, although Kangwa struggled while 17-year-old Biniaris offered considerable promise. Nistrup now has a long season and major demands ahead, along with a Moroccan playmaker who could become a game changer. The question is whether one Ounahi will be enough to bring a footballing spring.
