Agustín Barrios Guitar Festival opens with emotional tribute in Paraguay

The city of San Juan Bautista, Misiones, vibrated with the commencement of the International Agustín Barrios Guitar Festival, an event dedicated to honoring the legacy of the legendary Paraguayan guitarist. The inaugural night was a rich tapestry of music, culture, and emotion, as acclaimed guitarists paid tribute to the immortal composer before an enthusiastic audience that filled the venue.

The festival, held in the "Agustín Pío Barrios" auditorium, aims to celebrate Barrios's enduring influence by bringing together national and international artists. The opening performance was led by Javier Acosta Giangreco, who is also one of the festival's creators and organizers. Giangreco captivated the audience with his impeccable rendition of various works by Barrios, including "Danza Paraguaya," "Ha Che Valle," and "Julia Flor." He also performed compositions by José Asunción Flores, such as "Nde Ratypykua," "Nde Rendápe Aju," and "India," earning prolonged applause.

A particularly moving moment of the evening was a theatrical portrayal of Agustín Barrios himself, appearing in formal attire as he would have during his international performances. This characterization, brought to life by local guitarist Willian Pérez, who has dedicated years to studying and performing Barrios's music, evoked deep emotion. Pérez delivered a monologue expressing gratitude for the continued appreciation and dissemination of Barrios's works.

Concluding the night, Chilean guitarist José Antonio Escobar took the stage, delivering a sensitive and enthusiastic performance. He presented a selection of pieces by various composers, alongside Barrios's own compositions, mesmerizing the audience with his masterful execution. The festival promises further evenings of exceptional guitar artistry, keeping the spirit and music of Mangoré alive in his birthplace.
