Aircraft veers off runway during takeoff in Guna Yala; investigation launched

A pilot miraculously escaped injury after a small aircraft veered off the runway during a takeoff attempt in the Guna Yala region of Panama. The incident occurred on the morning of August 4th in Wanugandi.

The aircraft, a Cessna 172 with registration HP-1789, had departed from Marcos A. Gelabert Airport en route to Achutupu. The pilot was the sole occupant. According to the Civil Aeronautics Authority (AAC), adverse weather conditions forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in Wanugandi around 10:00 a.m.

As the pilot attempted to resume the flight to Achutupu, strong winds during takeoff caused the aircraft to veer off the right side of the runway. While the plane sustained damage, the pilot was unharmed, and no other individuals were affected.

The AAC has initiated an investigation into the accident to determine the precise causes and circumstances surrounding the event. Search and Rescue teams were dispatched to provide support, and the authority reaffirmed its commitment to operational safety and adherence to established protocols.
