Airline Plastic Waste Encouraged into Circular Economy Ecosystem

Plastic waste generated from airline activities poses a significant challenge in post-consumer waste management, requiring source separation for effective recycling. A new scheme is being developed to manage this waste, from aircraft cabins to recycling facilities, ensuring plastic materials retain economic value.

This initiative is a collaboration between Aqua and Citilink, focusing on managing post-consumer plastic waste from flights. Bali routes are serving as a pilot for this project, where plastic waste collected during flights is sorted and channeled into the recycling ecosystem. This model connects air transportation with waste collection and processing chains, transforming what was previously waste into materials with economic worth.

Laurent Boissier, CEO of Danone Indonesia, stated, "We believe that mobility and sustainability can go hand in hand. Through the Spirit of Movement, we want to show that cross-industry collaboration can bring more concrete solutions in driving a circular economy. This initiative is a concrete step to strengthen the collection and management of post-consumer plastic waste by involving local partners and communities."

Aqua has previously developed post-consumer plastic waste management systems through its network of waste banks, recycling business units, collection centers, and waste processing sites. Through these networks, Aqua and its partners collect over 51,000 tons of plastic waste annually for recycling into valuable materials, including raw materials for new product packaging.

Citilink's Director, Darsito Hendroseputro, added, "This step is part of our commitment to supporting the creation of a better ecosystem for the community and the environment.
