Airports Are Much More Dangerous for Migrants, Expert Lawyer Says

Airports have become significantly more dangerous for migrants, warns Hugo Vera, an expert in migration law. He states that these international transit hubs are prime locations for immigration authorities to detain and investigate individuals, making them riskier than other areas.

Vera explained that the U.S. government possesses the authority to detain people at airports for the sole purpose of investigation. This heightened level of scrutiny means migrants are more vulnerable to apprehension simply by being present at an airport, even if they have no intention of leaving the country immediately. He advises migrants to avoid airports unless absolutely necessary.

His comments come amid an increase in immigration enforcement operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These operations, which include vehicle stops, street patrols, and airport checks, have led to a surge in arrests nationwide. Data indicates ICE detained approximately 10,000 people in just five days in late June, averaging 2,000 arrests daily.

Vera emphasized the importance of migrants understanding their rights, particularly the right to remain silent when questioned by authorities. He noted that even individuals without criminal records and with active asylum cases have been taken into custody. The report highlights specific airports like LAX in California and Dallas in Texas as high-risk areas due to their status as international exchange points.
