Javier Grasso, an individual who identifies as a woman, has been moved from the women's prison wing at Bouwer prison in Córdoba, Argentina, to the male correctional facility. This decision comes after Grasso reportedly engaged in several fights while housed in the female section.

The transfer was initiated following a request from prosecutor José Bringas and intervention by the Córdoba Ministry of Justice. Internal security reports and assessments by the Penitentiary Service concluded that the conditions were not safe for Grasso to remain in contact with the female inmate population. The authorities determined that the risks associated with Grasso's criminological profile outweighed the implications of their registered gender identity.

Grasso had been a fugitive for eight months after the discovery of Milagro Bastos's body in her Córdoba apartment. They were apprehended in Salta province. Previously, in 2024, Grasso was detained in Paraguay for alleged theft and presented documentation identifying as female, despite retaining a male name. This documentation led to their initial placement in the women's prison wing in Bouwer.

The decision to transfer Grasso highlights a complex intersection of gender identity, prison safety, and criminal profiles. The Ministry of Justice emphasized that evaluating risks and acting on denunciations is a primary duty of the justice system, prioritizing safety assessments over formal identity changes in such cases.
