AKOM sets date: Torrential rain coming to Istanbul

Istanbul is bracing for a shift from summer heat to cooler, wetter conditions as a weather system moves in from the Balkans. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has issued a warning indicating that temperatures, which have been hovering around 30-33°C, will gradually decrease by 7-8°C starting Wednesday. This cooling trend is expected to bring the city's temperatures below seasonal averages.

The incoming weather system will usher in local showers and thunderstorms across the Marmara Region, including Istanbul. AKOM's forecast for Wednesday predicts temperatures around 32°C with 2-7 kg of rainfall per square meter. This pattern is set to continue through Thursday and Friday, with temperatures remaining around 26°C and rainfall amounts expected between 3-7 kg per square meter on both days.

As the week progresses, the rainfall is anticipated to intensify. Saturday is projected to see the heaviest precipitation, with potential accumulations of 10-20 kg per square meter accompanying thunderstorms. By Sunday, the weather is expected to become partly cloudy with intermittent showers, and temperatures are forecast to be around 28°C, with rainfall estimated at 3-7 kg per square meter.

Looking at Monday, July 20, the forecast suggests a high of 33°C during the day, with cooler temperatures in the morning and evening. Winds are expected to blow moderately from the northeast, occasionally reaching speeds of 10-30 km/h. Humidity levels will range between 40% and 80%, and the current sea temperature is measured at 24°C.
