Akufo-Addo Mourns Late Ya-Na at Gbewaa Palace

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited Gbewaa Palace in Yendi to mourn Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, the late Overlord of Dagbon.

Akufo-Addo said the Ya-Na’s reign brought lasting peace to Dagbon after years of chieftaincy disputes and opened the way for development. He recalled working closely with the traditional ruler after his installation in 2019.

The former president was outside Ghana when he learned of the Ya-Na’s death and the installation of the Regent under Dagbon’s customs and traditions. He therefore missed the customary ceremonies but arranged for representatives to convey greetings on his behalf.

Akufo-Addo also remembered the late Ya-Na as a good friend. He said the ruler had given him the title “Naa Abudani” in recognition of his contribution to reconciliation between Dagbon’s Abudu and Andani royal families.

He praised the Regent and senior traditional leaders for preserving the peace agreement, including the rotational principle used to select a successor. Regent Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari thanked Akufo-Addo and described him as a leader who had helped Dagbamba reach senior positions and created opportunities for them to serve Ghana.
