Al Fathul Akbar Mosque to become Palembang icon with Sriwijaya concept

The city of Palembang is set to unveil a new icon with the extensive rehabilitation of the Al Fathul Akbar Mosque. The project aims to transform the mosque into a significant landmark by integrating the architectural concept of the historic Sriwijaya Kingdom.

City officials have finalized the design, which draws inspiration from the maritime prowess of the Sriwijaya era. The mosque's structure will resemble a ship, a powerful symbol of Palembang's heritage as a river city and a successor to the Sriwijaya civilization. The dome will be designed to evoke waves, further reinforcing the maritime theme and the city's connection to its historical roots.

Beyond its symbolic design, the rehabilitation will substantially boost the mosque's capacity. Currently able to hold around 1,000 worshippers, the renovated Al Fathul Akbar Mosque will accommodate up to 2,000, addressing the growing needs of the local community for religious services.

Strategically located at the city's entrance in the Seberang Ulu area, the mosque is expected to become a prominent new landmark. Its monumental design aims to present a fresh face for Palembang and strengthen the city's image. Officials emphasized that the project balances religious function with aesthetic and cultural value, intending to create a building that instills pride in the community and enriches Palembang's architectural identity.
