Alberta driver caught speeding 230 km/h in B.C. faces charges, vehicle seizure

A young driver from Alberta faced significant consequences after being caught driving at an astonishing 230 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia. The incident occurred on Highway 93/95, where high patrol officers from Cranbrook observed the Audi traveling at nearly three times the legal speed limit.

Due to the extreme velocity, officers were unable to safely conduct an immediate traffic stop. Instead, they anticipated the vehicle's path and converged on a nearby campground where they believed it had gone. After speaking with members of the public, police located the Audi parked and unoccupied.

Due to how fast the car was speeding, RCMP said the officers were unable to safely initiate a traffic stop.

Officers then tracked down the driver, a 20-year-old male from Alberta. Suspecting he was under the influence of alcohol, they administered a roadside breath test, which resulted in a "WARN" reading. The driver was subsequently issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition, a violation ticket for excessive speeding, and another for driving without a license. His Audi was impounded for seven days, and he faces fines totaling $959 under the Motor Vehicle Act, in addition to towing and impoundment costs. The driver has also been referred to Alberta's administrative body for driving sanctions review.
