Alert over new armed coalitions in Fizi highlands, South Kivu

Authorities in the Fizi territory of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, have sounded an alarm regarding a concerning escalation in armed group activity. Samy Kalonji Badibanga, the territorial administrator, has reported the reinforcement of alliances between local militias and foreign fighters in the region's highlands. This development raises fears of a potential resurgence of conflict, even as the immediate security situation is described as relatively stable.

The newly formed coalition reportedly includes elements associated with the AFC/M23 rebels, a group known for its destabilizing presence in eastern DRC. This alliance is seen as a significant threat, potentially aimed at challenging the positions recently secured by the Congolese army (FARDC) and their Wazalendo allies. The Fizi highlands and the Minembwe sector remain particularly sensitive areas, prone to recurring clashes and instability.

Administrator Kalonji emphasized that the FARDC remains vigilant and committed to confronting these coalescing forces. However, the persistent instability in South Kivu province, exacerbated by ongoing security issues in Bukavu and recurrent fighting in and around Minembwe, creates a fragile environment. The local administration is calling for heightened vigilance to prevent any attempts to destabilize areas currently under government control.
