Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does not rule out 2028 U.S. presidential run

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure on the left wing of the Democratic Party, has stated she has not ruled out a presidential run in 2028.

Responding to a question about a recent poll from the University of New Hampshire that placed her as a favorite for the Democratic presidential primaries, Ocasio-Cortez said, "I have not ruled out the possibility and I am very honored by the enormous support I receive." The 36-year-old congresswoman, however, emphasized her current focus is on securing re-election for her New York district in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.

During the interview, Ocasio-Cortez also did not dismiss the possibility of competing in the Democratic primaries against Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat in 2028. She pointed to Abdul El-Sayed's recent victory in the Michigan Senate Democratic primaries as evidence of a "generational renewal" within the party. El-Sayed, a Muslim also aligned with the party's left wing, won his state's primary last Tuesday.

The University of New Hampshire poll showed Ocasio-Cortez leading the Democratic presidential primary field with 22% of support, followed by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg with 21% and California Governor Gavin Newsom with 15%. On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are considered frontrunners to succeed President Donald Trump, who is ineligible for a third term.
