Algarve named Europe's cheapest family holiday destination for 2026

Algarve in Portugal has topped the list as Europe's most affordable family holiday destination for 2026, according to a new report. The region, known for its beaches and family-friendly attractions, saw a slight decrease in prices compared to the previous year, making it a more attractive option as costs rise elsewhere.

The annual report, a collaboration between Post Office and TUI, analyzed the prices of 10 tourist items and services across 22 European resorts. These include family meals, various drinks like coffee and beer, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Algarve secured the top spot with a total cost of 163.65 euros for these items.

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria ranked second with a total cost of 166.59 euros, despite a 9.3% price increase from the prior year, which the report suggests may be linked to Bulgaria's potential Eurozone accession. Lanzarote in Spain's Canary Islands came in third at 172.75 euros.

Spain features prominently in the top 10, with six of its resorts making the list. The report highlights Algarve as an "excellent choice" for a straightforward seaside holiday, offering numerous attractions, beaches, and restaurants suitable for families. Popular towns within the region include Albufeira, Vilamoura, and Lagos.
