Algeria and Senegal set for historic WAFCON Group A opener

Algeria and Senegal are set to clash in a historic Group A opener at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026, taking place at the Rabat Olympic Stadium. This match signifies the first-ever WAFCON encounter between these two nations, setting the stage for an intriguing battle between North and West African football.

Algeria is making its seventh finals appearance and is celebrating consecutive qualifications for only the second time in its history. After struggling in their initial five appearances, the North Africans finally broke through in the 2024 edition by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time. Historically, Algeria has faced challenges against West African teams, holding a record of two wins, one draw, and five defeats in eight previous meetings. They have notably faced West African opponents in four previous opening matches, with mixed results.
