Super Falcons begin title defense at WAFCON against Malawi

Nigeria's Super Falcons are set to launch their campaign for an 11th continental crown on Tuesday, July 27, as the expanded 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicks off in Morocco. The tournament, running from July 26 to August 16, features 16 nations vying not only for regional glory but also for a direct ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The record-holding Nigerians find themselves in a competitive Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt, and tournament debutants Malawi. Head coach Justin Madugu has selected a balanced squad, blending experienced players with younger talent. The team is anchored by world-class goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, with a potent attacking lineup including Asisat Oshoala, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Esther Okoronkwo, and Folashade Ijamilusi.

The Super Falcons' opening match against Malawi, a debutant in the expanded tournament format, will be followed by a highly anticipated clash against Zambia on July 31. Zambia, featuring global stars Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, presents Nigeria's toughest group stage challenge. The Nigerian team will conclude the group phase against Egypt on August 4.

Despite Nigeria's historical dominance, winning 10 out of 13 WAFCON iterations since 1998, Coach Madugu remains cautious. "We know every team now believes they can challenge Nigeria," he stated. "We have to earn every victory through discipline, hard work, and consistency." The stakes are unprecedented, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) significantly increasing the prize fund to $5.8 million, including a record $2 million for the champions. Furthermore, the semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup, with quarter-final losers entering playoffs for the remaining two spots.
