All of Metro Line 2 will be operational for the World Cup, assures Rubalcava; cleaning and mural work will continue

Mexico City's Line 2 of the Metro system will be fully operational for the start of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday, June 11, according to Adrián Rubalcava, the general director of the Metro Collective Transport System (STC).

Rubalcava assured that all stations will open and provide service to passengers for the football tournament. However, he noted that some finishing touches, such as cleaning and the installation of murals, will continue after the service begins. One particularly impressive mural is still awaiting completion at the Auditorio station.

The staggered approach means that while stations will be functional for the World Cup, their official inaugurations will take place as each station's remaining work is concluded. This ensures that the essential transportation needs for the event are met without delaying the overall service.

Originally, the head of government, Clara Brugada, was scheduled to inaugurate the renovation work at the Taxqueña station on Tuesday. However, her agenda was adjusted due to protests by the CNTE, leading to the postponement of the inauguration event.

In operation, the stations will be in operation, however, there are some small cleaning jobs that are required, the installation for example of some murals, we are waiting for the completion of a mural that is impressive, that is very beautiful, that will be at Auditorio, that, without a doubt, the artist will continue to work on. This does not mean that the station will not be functional, they will be opened to users, however, we will continue working on these details and the inaugurations will be generated as we conclude the stations in their entirety with these details. In their functionality, the stations, on the day of the inauguration of the matches, must be opened in their entirety.
