Almaty leads Kazakhstan in electric scooter accidents; new regulations in effect

Almaty has emerged as the region with the most electric scooter accidents in Kazakhstan, according to recent statistics. In the first eight months of 2026, the city registered 107 e-scooter-related incidents, far surpassing any other area in the country.

Astana followed with 24 accidents, while Shymkent recorded six. Among the provinces, Aktobe, Atyrau, and Pavlodar regions each reported three cases. The safest regions for riders included Zhambyl and Kyzylorda, with two accidents each, and several others with only one incident. Notably, the Abai, Karaganda, Mangystau, North Kazakhstan, and Ulytau regions reported no e-scooter accidents.

Collectively, Almaty and Astana account for approximately 83 percent of the total 157 accidents nationwide. This concentration highlights a significant safety concern in Kazakhstan's largest urban centers.

Kazakhstan implemented new regulations for electric scooter use on July 1, 2026. Riders must now be of legal age and possess a valid driver's license to use public roads. Rental e-scooters require registration and insurance. Furthermore, as of August 25, riding e-scooters on sidewalks and pedestrian paths is prohibited.
