Almaty Metro has stopped - video of passenger evacuation released

Almaty Metro services have been suspended due to power outages, forcing the evacuation of passengers from trains and stations. Videos circulating show the process of passengers leaving the metro system. According to the metro administration, train operations are halted until the external power supply can be restored. In the interim, station lighting and ventilation systems are functioning on backup battery power.

The power disruptions began around 3:00 PM on August 14, impacting Almaty and the wider Almaty Region. Official reports attribute the outage to a failure on 500 kV overhead power lines managed by KEGOC. Preliminary assessments suggest the incident resulted in a load shed of approximately 300 MW. The power failures were reported across numerous districts within the city and in various districts of the Almaty Region, including Zhambyl, Balkhash, and Talgar.

The consequences of the blackout in Almaty have been significant, leading to the failure of multiple traffic lights. This has caused severe traffic congestion throughout the city, prompting the deployment of traffic controllers to manage intersections. Communication networks have also been disrupted. Specialists from Alatau Zharyk Company JSC are actively working to restore electricity to affected consumers. An announcement regarding the resumption of metro services will be made once power is fully restored.
