Alonso smashes record to win 100m gold for Dominican Republic

Dominican sprinter Liranyi Alonso delivered a dominant performance to claim the 100-meter gold medal at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo. The 20-year-old athlete shattered the event's previous record, clocking an impressive 11.10 seconds on home soil.

Alonso's historic run erased the 11.14-second record set by Bahamian legend Chandra Sturrup at the Maracaibo 1998 Games, a mark that had stood for nearly three decades. From the moment the gun fired, Alonso took an early lead, maintaining a powerful stride to cross the finish line well ahead of her competitors.

The silver medal went to Puerto Rico's Gladymar Torres with a time of 11.22 seconds, while Cuba's Yarima García secured bronze at 11.32 seconds. This triumph marks a significant milestone for Alonso, who also competed in the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo and won the 2025 Pan American U20 title, confirming her as the new sprint sensation for the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean region.

"It is an indescribable pride to give this gold medal to my country in front of my family and my people," Alonso said, visibly emotional after her victory lap with the Dominican flag.
