Alpac Capital CEO urges Serbia to ensure independent media regulator

Pedro Vargas David, CEO of Alpac Capital, has addressed Serbian Information and Telecommunications Minister Boris Bratina's request to register media outlets N1 Belgrade and Nova S with the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) upon completion of the takeover.

Vargas acknowledged the argument for regulating national television channels where editorial decisions are made but emphasized that national regulators must be independent and functional. He noted the EU Commission's recognition of progress on REM but urged Serbian authorities to finalize these matters. "We would strongly encourage the Serbian authorities to finalize this and guarantee an independent and functioning regulator," Vargas stated, viewing it as an opportunity for Serbia to align with EU standards.

Addressing the evolving media landscape, Vargas observed a trend, imported from the United States, where journalists and media organizations act as "political forces." He expressed concern when news organizations prioritize being the news over reporting it, leading to increased aggression from politicians and boycotts. Vargas believes that while journalists are free to share agendas, this approach can undermine journalism and its credibility. Vargas also touched upon media neutrality, objectivity, and independence, asserting they should be reflected in the daily work of journalists.
