Ambrin Buang Declines Comment on Tabung Haji RCI Controversy

Former Auditor-General Ambrin Buang has declined to comment on the controversy surrounding the Royal Commission of Inquiry into issues involving Malaysia’s Tabung Haji pilgrimage fund.

Ambrin chose not to issue a statement when contacted by Utusan Malaysia. The inquiry’s report listed him alongside two other former auditors-general, Madinah Mohamad and Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid, under statutory declarations from witnesses who were not called to give evidence before the commission.

All three, however, submitted their explanations through statutory declarations. They led the National Audit Department during part or all of the 2014 to 2020 period examined by the inquiry in reviewing Tabung Haji’s management and operations.

Ambrin served as auditor-general from 2006 until February 2017. Madinah succeeded him and held the post until February 2019, followed by Nik Azman.

The commission is investigating several issues involving Tabung Haji, including investment transactions, its financial position and hibah payments to depositors.
