Amit Shah cancels BJP Goa event after building collapse in Delhi

Amit Shah cancelled his scheduled visit to Goa after learning about the collapse of a building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan. The Union home minister had been due to inaugurate the newly constructed BJP state office in Chimbel.

Shah arrived in Goa on Saturday evening for a three-day visit, which was also to include chairing the 28th meeting of the Western Zonal Council. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, state cabinet ministers and BJP state chief Damodar Naik received him on arrival.

A preliminary inquiry indicated that around 40 to 50 people may have been inside the building when it collapsed, a police official at the scene told Hindustan Times. Three people were reported injured, and AIIMS Delhi sources said all three had been admitted to the trauma centre in critical condition.

Emergency teams began working at the site to establish how many people might be trapped and assess the damage. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said she was “deeply concerned” and that rescue teams were working “on a war footing”. She said the operation involved the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centralised Accident and Trauma Services and Civil Defence. Gupta added that the neighboring building had been evacuated as a precaution.
