‘Most students would be inside’: Locals join rescue after boys’ PG collapses in Delhi’s Satya Niketan

Residents joined emergency workers with their bare hands and whatever equipment they could find after a building collapsed in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. Witnesses said students may be trapped beneath the debris.

Police said they did not yet know how many people were trapped or injured. A preliminary inquiry indicated that around 40 to 50 people may have been inside when the building collapsed. AIIMS Delhi sources said three patients had been admitted to the trauma centre, all in critical condition.

The structure was believed to be a boys’ paying guest accommodation. One eyewitness told ANI that it was called “Hostel Daze”, although officials had not confirmed that identification. The eyewitness also said an adjacent building had collapsed and that students inside their rooms were trapped under the rubble.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said she was “deeply concerned” and that rescue teams were working “on a war footing”. The operation involved the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centralised Accident and Trauma Services and Civil Defence.

The neighboring building was evacuated as a precaution while teams assessed the damage and searched for people beneath the debris.
